This study investigates the transformation of Jerusalem's religious identity from its sanctification as a Christian city in the fourth century to the formation of its Muslim character during the early Islamic period (638–715). The primary aim is to understand how Christian Jerusalem's worldly sacredness was constructed through religious, architectural, and political dynamics and how this identity evolved in response to the emergence of Muslim Jerusalem. The research analyzes the Christian sacred topography of the city after 326, including churches, relic centers, and pilgrimage routes. It also examines how this identity was challenged by the Sasanian invasion in 614 and subsequently transformed under Muslim rule following the conquest of 638. The study highlights the role of pilgrimage and monastic practices in both the construction and transformation of Christian sacred identity. Additionally, it explores how Christian sanctity was redefined under the architectural and religious policies of the early Islamic administration. Thus, Jerusalem's sacred identity is presented as a product of both continuity and rupture. By comparing the roles of pilgrimage and monastic institutions in the Roman and early Islamic periods, the study contributes to a broader understanding of the historical evolution of sacred urban identities.
