This thesis explores the distinguishing characteristics of elite schools in Türkiye to understand the impact of these schools on potential elite formation. The study is based on interviews with 36 alumni from different graduation cohorts of three elite schools. This qualitative study traces the transformation of the elite school experience over time and theorizes the relationship between elite education and potential elite formation in Türkiye through a grounded theory approach. Theoretically, the research rests on Basil Bernstein’s conceptualization of the school’s “expressive and instrumental orders” and Pierre Bourdieu’s “systemic concepts.” The “Hierarchy of Advantage” theory developed in the study reveals that elite school graduates’ chances of accessing elite status are hierarchically distributed based on their ascription of different forms of capital. Unlike findings in the international literature, the group occupying the lowest rung in this hierarchy is not defined as “disadvantaged”; but rather as “advantaged,” as these graduates, despite limited capital, acquire specific “elite qualities” that help them stand out in their subsequent educational and professional trajectories. Graduates with considerable levels of “secular capital” and “economic capital” are categorized as “doubly advantaged” and “multiply advantaged,” with progressively higher chances of accessing the elite class. The study also finds that elite school graduates’ experiences of privilege and belonging diversify according to the types of capital inherited from their families and the sociopolitical atmosphere. Being one of the first comprehensive studies to examine elite education from a sociological perspective within the Turkish context, the thesis offers an original contribution to the literature.
