This paper aims to investigate the role and activities of Armenian calico printers in the birth of the printing manifacture and development of cotton weaving in the 18th century Ottoman Empire, in the light of Ottoman archive documents. Calico printing, one of the units of Ottoman guilds’organization, is the art of embroidering by printing various patterns painted with a brush on wooden blocks or drawing them individually. The birth of calico printing in the Ottoman Empire was accepted as the building of the printing factory in the 19th century. The weaving industry which existed in the early period was ignored although it was the second important volume of production after grain. The most important contribution of this paper to the literature is to make the calico printers in the Ottoman Empire visible by using the data obtained from the 18th century population registers, and with tables. Thus, the article brings an alternative perspective to the discussions of whether there was a period of industrialization in the Ottoman Empire or not. It will be more inclusive to analyze the alternatives offered by this study: "How was the Ottoman industry in the early period, how were the financial profiles of the calico printers, and how was their relations with the West?". Armenian calico printers had improved the weawing journey which started at the printing places built in the 18th century in Yenikapı, Fazlı Pasha and Ayazma in Istanbul and carried their reputation beyond the borders. The fact that important European cities followed with great interest their printing/painting techniques paved the way for them to be called as “calico printers” and to be known as inventors of the Turkey red. In this paper, the contribution of Armenian calico printers to the printing production in the early period of the Ottoman Empire will be discussed. Furthermore, a brief history of printing will be mentioned through the weawing routes between the west and east within the frame of commercial relations they established with European weaving centers.
