This thesis examines the use of ivory in Byzantine art from various aspects. Ivory has been regarded as a luxurious and prestigious material since Antiquity. The purpose of this study is to explain in detail whether ivory retained its value as a precious material in Byzantine art, as it did in Ancient times, and to identify the features that made it significant. Additionally, the thesis aims to analyze the impact of ivory on art, culture, and the economy by examining its multifaceted influence. In the Byzantine Empire, ivory was acquired through trade routes from India and Africa. The demand for ivory, which persisted from Antiquity, remained high in Byzantine art as well. It continued to be used as a prestigious material in the production and decoration of various objects. This study, which examines the use of ivory objects from the Early Byzantine period to the end of the Late Byzantine period, aims to classify and evaluate ivory based on its religious and secular uses. Furthermore, the effects of Byzantine trade routes, political developments, and East-West relations on the use of ivory are also addressed. The marriage of Byzantine Princess Theophano to Otto II deepened Byzantine influences in Western European art, and the contributions of this artistic interaction are given significant importance in the thesis. The decline in ivory craftsmanship, alongside other art forms, during the Iconoclastic period is explored, as well as the effects of this period on artistic production. The revival that began in the 9th century, following the end of Iconoclasm, is also evaluated.By the Late Byzantine period, the empire's economy had deteriorated, and both the empire and its people had become impoverished. As a result, the use of ivory—a costly and difficult-to-obtain material—declined during this period. To conclusion, the continued use and value of ivory across civilizations IV is critical to understanding the social, economic, and cultural structures of both the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. This study analyzes the place and significance of ivory in Byzantine art, revealing its economic and artistic value.
