Ortaokul öğrencilerinin serbest okuma tercihleri içinde çizgi romanın yerine ilşkin bir durum çalışması

Abstract

Günümüzde modernleşme, küreselleşme ve dijitalleşme süreçlerinin etkisiyle alışılagelmiş sosyal alanlarda kendini ifade imkânı bulamayan çocuklar çevrim içi alanlarda kendilerine ait dünyalar kurmaktadırlar. Tüketim kültürü ve medyanın yoğunlaştığı bu ortamlar çocukluk dönemini ve bu dönemin önemli bir parçası olan okuma tercihlerini dönüştürmüştür. Bu bağlamda çizgi romanlar; görsel gücü, akıcı anlatımı ve çarpıcı karakterleri ile çocukların dikkatini çeken bir tür olmuştur. Ayrıca çizgi romanın merkezde bulunduğu, onun çevresini yeni hikâye anlatıcılığı türleri ile saran ve tüketim kültürünü farklı medya türleriyle destekleyerek genişleten yeni bir altkültür oluşmuştur. Bu çalışmada ortaokul öğrencilerinin serbest okuma için tercih ettikleri kitaplar arasındaki yükselişiyle dikkat çeken çizgi romanın konumunu belirleyen bileşenlerin açığa çıkarılması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma, nitel yöntemlerden durum çalışması ile yapılandırılmıştır. Çalışma grubu tabakalı örnekleme ile belirlenmiştir. Veriler, İstanbul ili Ümraniye ilçesinin sosyoekonomik durumu farklı mahallelerinde yer alan beş ortaokulda öğrenim gören 100 kız ve 100 erkek öğrenciden toplanmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılmış, formlardan elde edilen bilgiler tümdengelimci analizi yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Görüşme formlarına ek olarak katılımcıların en çok okuduğu üç çizgi roman çocuk kitaplarında bulunan yapı ölçütlerine göre incelenmiştir. Çalışma sonuçları, katılımcıların serbest okuma tercihlerinde çizgi romanın geniş bir yer tuttuğunu ve bu tercihlerinde çizime duyulan ilgi, karakterlerle özdeşim kurma, bir gruba ait hissetme ve kimlik inşa etme gibi unsurların etkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Çalışma sonunda araştırmacı, öğretmen, ebeveyn ve yayıncılara çizgi romanların pedagojik bir araç olarak değerlendirilmesinin gerekliliği yönünde öneriler sunulmuştur.

In today's world, with the effect of modernisation, globalisation and digitalisation processes, children who cannot find the opportunity to express themselves in conventional social spaces build their own worlds in online spaces. These environments where consumption culture and media are intensified have transformed childhood and reading preferences, which are an important part of this period. In this context, comics have become a genre that attracts children's attention with its visual power, engaging narratives and memorable characters. Additionally, a new subculture has emerged centred on comics, encompassing new storytelling genres and expanding the culture of consumption through various types of media. This study aims to reveal the components that determine the position of the comic book, which attracts attention with its rise among the books preferred by secondary school students for free reading activities. The research was structured with a case study from qualitative methods. The study group was determined by stratified sampling. The data were collected from 100 female and 100 male students studying in five secondary schools located in different socioeconomic status neighbourhoods of Ümraniye district of Istanbul province. The interview form prepared by the researcher was used as a data collection tool, and the information obtained from the forms was analysed by deductive analysis method. In addition to the interview form, the three comics that the participants read the most were analysed according to the structure criteria found in children's books. The findings show that comics have a large place in students' free reading preferences and that these preferences are influenced by factors such as intrinsic motivation, visual use, identification, belonging to a group and identity construction. These findings reveal that the boundaries of children's literature should be rethought. At the end of the study, researchers, teachers, parents and publishers were offered suggestions for the necessity of evaluating comic books as a pedagogical tool; it was argued that they could be used more consciously in education and cultural environments.
