Gotik Mimari ve Skolastik Felsefe İlişkisi Üzerine Bir Deneme

Abstract

Erwin Panofsky'nin Gotik Mimarlık ve Skolastik Felsefe isimli 1951 tarihli kitabı, müzelerde karşımıza çıkan sanat eserlerinin yanında, içinde yaşadığımız alanları kuşatan mimari unsurların da başka bir gözle değerlendirmesinde yol gösterici oldu. 1934 de ilk kez Jan van Eyck’in “Amolfini Portresi”nin, sadece bir evlilik seremonisini göstermeyip, evliliğin kutsallığına yönelik birçok gizli öğenin sembollerini de barındırdığını öne süren makalesi ile ikonoloji yolunda yeni anlayışların yolunu Panofksy açmıştı. Panofsky’ye göre sanat eserleri sadece maddi değil düşünsel öğelerle de bize bir tarih okuması sunarken eserin katmanları arasındaki farklılıklar ve ilişkilerinin değerlendirilmesi, yaratıldığı çağa ait yeni bilgilere ulaşmayı da sağlar. Üç farklı tabaka halinde karşımıza çıkan sanat nesneleri, ikonolojik yöntem ile tarihsel-sanatsal olarak araştırılabilir. Bu çalışmamızda, Skolastik dönemde inşa edilmiş Gotik mimari üsluptaki kiliselerin ikonolojik araştırmasını yapan Panofsky’nin Skolastik felsefe ve Gotik mimari arasındaki paralelliğe yönelik saptadığı bulgular örneklenmektedir. Çalışmamız ayrıca, mimarinin dışsal ereği de göz önünde bulundurma zorunluluğundan dolayı, bu yöntemin tek başına mimari eserleri betimlemeye yeterli olup olmadığını araştırmayı da amaçlamaktadır.

Erwin Panofsky's 1951 book, Gothic Architecture and Scholastic Philosophy, was a guide for the evaluation of the architectural elements that surround the areas we live in, in addition to the works of art that we encounter in the museums. In 1934, Panofksy opened new paths of iconology with the article that Jan van Eyck's Amolfini Portrait not only showed a marriage ceremony but also contained the symbols of many secret elements for the holiness of marriage. According to Panofsky, it is not only the material element of the artwork that offers us a history reading but also their intellectual content, and that the evaluation of the differences and relationships between the layers of the work also provide access to new information about the age in which it was created. Art objects that we encounter appear in three different layers to us can be investigated historically and artistically by the iconological method. In this study, Panofsky's iconological investigation about the parallelism between Scholastic Philosophy and Gothic architecture of churches those were built in the gothic architectural style in the scholastic period are examplified. Our study also aims to investigate whether this method alone is sufficient to describe architectural works, since the external purpose of the architecture should also be taken into consideration.
