The Use of Typography in Illustrated Books: A Content Analysis on Legibility and Readability

Abstract

Illustrated books are the first visual reading tool with which the child interacts and communicates. The ability to interact and communicate effectively with the reader of illustrated books, which are read to preschool children by their parents and followed by the illustrations by the children, and in which both typographic elements and illustrations are watched by the child learning to read in the primary school period, depends on the consistency of the form and content. The consistency of form and content in typography is directly related to the anatomical features of typographic elements, legibility, and readability. From this point of view, the study aims to reveal how typographic elements are used in illustrated books, how they are placed on the page, and how they shape or create the message and meaning. Accordingly, 54 Turkish illustrated books from different publishing houses were evaluated using the criterion sampling technique and analyzed using content analysis based on legibility and readability criteria.

Çocuğun ilk etkileşim ve iletişim içinde olduğu görsel okuma aracı resimli kitaplardır. Okul öncesi dönem çocuklarına ebeveynleri tarafından okunup çocuklar tarafından resimlemeleri takip edilen, öte yandan ilkokul döneminde okuma öğrenen çocuk tarafından da hem tipografik unsurların hem de resimlemelerin izlendiği resimli kitapların okuyucusu ile etkili etkileşim ve iletişim kurabilmesi biçim ve içeriğin tutarlılığına bağlıdır. Tipografide biçim ve içerik tutarlılığı, tipografik unsurların anatomik özellikleri, okunaklılık ve okunabilirlik ile doğrudan ilişkilidir. Buradan hareketle çalışmada, resimli kitaplarda tipografik unsurların nasıl kullanıldığı, sayfadaki yerleşiminin nasıl olduğu ve bunların iletiyi, anlamı nasıl şekillendirdiği ya da oluşturduğunun ortaya koyulması amaçlanmaktadır. Buna göre, farklı yayınevlerinden çıkan ölçüt örnekleme tekniği aracılığıyla 54 Türkçe resimli kitap değerlendirmeye alınmış ve içerik analizi yöntemiyle okunaklılık ve okunabilirlik ölçütleri üzerinden çözümlenmiştir.
