Social Studies Instruction Based on the Origami Technique for Students with Learning Difficulties

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of origami activity on the achievement of the social studies lesson outcome in fourth grade students with learning difficulties. In line with this purpose, action research method was used in the study and study group was formed with 14 students. Data were collected through verbal questions asked to the students, worksheets, and semi-structured interviews. While verbal questions and worksheets were being scored, the interviews were subjected to content analysis. As a result of the study, it was seen that origami activities made positive contributions to students with learning difficulties in achieving the social studies outcome and provided retention of the target outcome. In addition, according to student opinions, it was concluded that origami activities facilitate understanding, facilitate learning, develop imagination as well as hand skills, and teach patience.

Bu çalışma ilkokul dördüncü sınıfta öğrenim gören ve öğrenme güçlüğü yaşayan öğrencilerde origami etkinliğinin sosyal bilgiler dersi kazanımına ulaşılmasına etkisinin incelenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda çalışmada eylem araştırması yöntemi kullanılmış, 14 öğrenci ile çalışma grubu oluşturulmuştur. Veriler öğrencilere sorulan sözel sorular, çalışma kâğıdı ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Sözel sorular ve çalışma kâğıdı puanlandırılırken görüşmeler içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Çalışma sonucunda origami etkinliklerinin sosyal bilgiler kazanımına ulaşmada öğrenme güçlüğü olan öğrencilere olumlu katkılar sunduğu ve hedef kazanıma ilişkin kalıcılığı sağladığı görülmüştür. Buna ek olarak öğrenci görüşlerinden hareketle origami etkinliklerinin anlamayı kolaylaştırdığı, öğrenmede kolaylık sağladığı, hayal gücünü ve el becerilerini geliştirdiği, sabretmeyi öğrettiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
