The science of logic, whose fundamental aim is to safeguard human thought from error, has historically witnessed two principal approaches regarding its subject matter. The first holds that the subject of logic is the “second intelligibles” (al-ma?q?l?t al-th?niyya), while the second maintains that logic deals with the cognitive states of conceptualization (ta?awwur?t) and assent (ta?d?q?t). Al-F?r?b?, taking into consideration earlier debates, introduced the concept of second intelligibles; however, the first philosopher to explicitly designate these as the subject of logic was Ibn S?n?. As such, those who adopt this view are generally referred to as philosophers following the tradition of Ibn S?n?. Among the leading figures of this school are ?Umar b. Sahl?n al-S?w? (d. 1145), Fakhr al-D?n al-R?z? (d. 1210), Na??r al-D?n al-??s? (d. 1273), Shahrz?r? (d. 1288), Shams al-D?n al-Samarqand? (d. 1303), Qu?b al-D?n al-R?z? (d. 1365), and Sayyid Shar?f al-Jurj?n? (d. 1413). In contrast, those who argue that the subject of logic comprises two types of knowledge—conceptualization and assent—represent an alternative tradition. Notable proponents of this view include Afdal al-D?n al-Kh?naj? (d. 1248), his student Ibn W??il al-?amaw? (d. 1298), Ath?r al-D?n al-Abhar? (d. 1265), Sir?j al-D?n al-Urmaw? (d. 1283), Najm al-D?n al-K?tib? (d. 1277), and Sa?d al-D?n al-Taft?z?n? (d. 1390), a prominent scholar of the fourteenth century. In this context, one of the eminent Ottoman scholars of the eighteenth century, Gelenbev?, is among those who maintained that the subject of logic consists of ta?awwur?t and ta?d?q?t. He articulates this view explicitly in his works on logic. Moreover, a brief treatise attributed to him, entitled Maw??? al-Man?iq (“The Subject of Logic”), summarizes the debates surrounding this issue. In this treatise, various opinions and the objections directed at them are discussed; however, the names of the scholars who support these positions are not mentioned. The treatise refers to those who regard second intelligibles as the subject of logic as the mutaqaddim?n (early scholars), and those who maintain that conceptualization and assent—considered in terms of leading from the known to the unknown—form its subject as the muta?akhkhir?n (later scholars). Nevertheless, the treatise refrains from explicitly favoring either of these two approaches. Upon examining Gelenbev?’s extant logical works, it has been determined that this two-page treatise was not excerpted from any of them, but rather was composed as an independent text.
