Sharenting: feasibility of the measures available to children

Abstract

Sharenting (share and parenting) is the parents' online sharing of their children's information. The child's digital footprints are formed through their parents' sharenting activities long before they become familiar with the Internet. However, they may not be content with the online presence their parents have created. This might create a conflict between the child's right to privacy and the parental rights and parents' freedom of expression, regardless of the parents' motives behind the shares. Children may also want to have their information removed. Whether a child can do anything legally against its parents regarding sharenting activities is the main question addressed in the article. To answer this question, first, the applicable rules will be identified. Then, the practicality of these measures will be assessed to determine to what extent the children could be protected in the context of sharenting.
