THE PROBLEMATIC OF ‘THE THEY’ IN HEIDEGGER

Abstract

Focusing on § 27 in Heidegger's Being and Time, this study aims to analyze and interpret the problematic of the They (das Man) and related issues. Being-with is an eksistential-ontological determination of Dasein. The They is a general form of being-with in everyday life. Dasein is primarily and mostly the They in everyday life. In other words, Dasein's self in ordinary existence is the They-self, that is to say, it is found to be scattered across the They. The They has an implicit and unnamed dictatorship on Dasein, so it is inevitably subject to this neutral and impersonal subject: The They determines Dasein entirely in his everyday life. After all, the They is the anonymous subject of ordinary existence. In this case, Dasein's decisions and evaluations are not really his own; he is, in fact, embedded in the They and is far from the possibility of having a true/authentic self. This study also focuses on the ways in which the They establishes its dominance by the way of mediocrity, publicness, and flatting, and in this way, how this domination is embodied. Finally, meditation and art are highlighted as two privileged ways of getting rid of the They’s dictatorship and reaching a true/authentic self: Through these two possibilities, man can get out of the heedlessness and lethargy found in the daily or routine life and find himself.

Heidegger’in Varlık ve Zaman adlı eserindeki § 27’ye odaklanan bu çalışma, herkes (das Man) sorunsalını ve onunla ilgili meseleleri analiz edip yorumlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Birlikte-olma Dasein’ın egzistansiyal-ontolojik bir belirlenimidir. Herkes ise birlikte-olma’nın gündeliklikte aldığı genel bir biçimdir. Dasein gündelik hayatta öncelikle ve çoğunlukla herkes’tir yani kendi değil de her hangi biridir. Başka bir deyişle, Dasein’ın gündelik hayattaki kendiliği, gerçekte, bir herkes-kendiliğidir; çünkü bu kendilik herkes’e dağılmış vaziyettedir. Herkes’in Dasein üzerinde örtük ve adı konmamış bir diktatörlüğü söz konusudur; öylesine ki, Dasein, bu nötr ve gayri şahsi özneye kaçınılmaz bir şekilde tâbidir: Gündelik varoluşun anonim öznesi olan herkes, Dasein’ı gündelik varoluşunda bütünüyle belirlemektedir. Bu durumda, Dasein’ın karar, yargı ve değerlendirmeleri hakiki anlamda kendisine ait değildir; çünkü o, herkes’e soğrulmuş vaziyette olup sahici bir kendiliğe sahip olma imkânından uzaktır. Bu çalışmada aynı zamanda sıradanlık, kamusallık ve düzleştirme gibi herkes’in hâkimiyetini tesis ettiği yollar üzerinde durulmakta ve bu surette söz konusu hâkimiyetin nasıl cisimleştiği örneklendirilmektedir. Son olarak da, herkes’in sultasından kurtulup sahici bir kendiliğe ulaşmanın iki ayrıcalıklı yolu olarak teemmül ve sanat ele alınmaktadır: Bu iki imkân yoluyla insan gündelik ya da rutin hayatın yaydığı gaflet ve rehavetin dışına çıkabilir ve kendini bulabilir.
