Aykut Ertuğrul’s Storytelling in The Footsteps of Fantastic and Magical Realist Literature

Abstract

Aykut Ertuğrul, one of the most noteworthy storytellers of modern Turkish literature, has developed a distinctive narrative style through the incorporation of fantastic and magical realism in his works. Ertuğrul fuses the peculiar and thought-provoking elements of fantastic literature with the contemplative ambience of magical realism, providing readers with a sense of estrangement from the familiar and prompting them to reconsider established themes through unconventional narrative techniques. The extraordinary and supernatural elements that infiltrate the known world in his stories are typically derived from local traditional narratives including fairy tales, myths, folk tales, and Qur’anic parables. In Ertuğrul's narratives, heroes and motifs from these narratives and folk culture are blended with modernist and postmodernist narrative techniques. Ertuğrul's texts are characterised by an expansive interpretation of meaning, achieved through the utilisation of fantastical and magical realist modes. Such works offer readers an engaging and thought-provoking reading experience, frequently incorporating philosophical and metaphysical themes. These include the modern individual's sense of stagnation, the futility of not being a hero, cyclical time and the inevitability of fate, as well as current political and social issues. In this article, the concepts of fantasy, the fantastic and magical realism, which are sometimes conflated in literary studies, are examined in detail. Aykut Ertuğrul's stories in which the fantastical and magical realist mode is used are analysed in terms of the reflections of the extraordinary on people, objects, time and space, and the use of dystopia, fortune telling and magic elements, and thus the nature of the author's fantastic universe is revealed.

Çağdaş Türk edebiyatının dikkat çeken öykücülerinden olan Aykut Ertuğrul, eserlerinde fantastik ve büyülü gerçekçiliği kullanarak kendine özgü bir öykü dili geliştirmiştir. Fantastiğin yadırgatıcı ve merak uyandırıcı gücü ile büyülü gerçekçiliğin etkileyici atmosferini bir araya getiren Ertuğrul’un, okuru aşina olduğu zaman ve mekânlara yabancılaştırarak şaşırtma ve tanıdık konuları alışılmadık şekilde anlatarak onu bunlar üzerine yeniden düşündürme yoluna gittiği görülmektedir. Öykülerinde bilinen dünyaya sızan olağanüstü ve doğaüstü unsurları genellikle masal, mit, halk hikâyesi, Kur’an kıssaları gibi yerli geleneksel anlatılara dayandıran Ertuğrul, bu anlatılardan ve halk kültüründen gelen kahraman ve motifleri, modernist ve postmodernist anlatım teknikleriyle harmanlamaktadır. Fantastik ve büyülü gerçekçi kipleri kullanarak metinlerin anlam alanını genişleten ve okura eğlenceli ve düşündürücü bir okuma deneyimi sunan Ertuğrul, öykülerinde güncel politik ve toplumsal sorunların yanı sıra modern bireyin sıkışmışlığı, kahraman olamama yazgısı, döngüsel zaman ve kaderin kaçınılmazlığı gibi felsefi ve metafizik izleklere de sıkça yer vermektedir. Literatürde zaman zaman birbirine karıştırıldığı görülen fantastik, fantezi ve büyülü gerçekçilik kavramlarının detaylıca irdelendiği bu makalede, Aykut Ertuğrul’un fantastik ve büyülü gerçekçilik kipi kullandığı öyküleri; olağanüstünün kişiler, nesneler, zaman ve mekâna yansımaları ile distopya, fal ve büyü ögelerinin kullanımları bakımından incelenmiş ve böylelikle yazarın fantastik evreninin mahiyeti ortaya konulmuştur.
