'How Does Context Generate Term?' - A Functional (Contextual) Approach- Based Overview to the Formation of Turkish Mathematical Terms in the Ottoman Empire

Abstract

This article considers Turkish mathematical terms in the Ottoman Empire as an object of cultural linguistics and examines the processes of term formation from the perspective of the functional (contextual) approach in semasiology. In this context, concepts and meaning formations are evaluated through the language worldview, the well-known principle of language, culture and translation studies, in the focus of historical terminology, as a result of communicative contexts arising from scholar/author-student/interlocutor, source language/target language relations. Furthermore, it is argued that the addressees and targets, which are the reason why Turkish copyrights and translated scientific works are written in Anatolia, directly cause the derivation of terms. In this regard, the article presents a theoretical interpretation based on contextual analysis, emphasizing that the influence of culture and the contexts that make up communication are stronger than morphological methods in the formation of a term.
