Roman Empire which moved her capital to Constantinople with a decree of Constantine moved not only her institutions but also her culture and architecture. Having become a capital, the city came to be an attraction in a short time by being decorated with imperial buildings. Constantinople possesed a very colourful urban texture with emperor being a resident, aristocrats, rich families and other layers of her society. Privilege of being a capital precipitated urban development and architectural rivalry emerged amongs the privileged residents of the city. When Theodosian dynasty ended up and Justinianic rule started, this architectural rivalry turned into a means which was used to demonstrate who the legitimacy and power belonged to. In this context, struggle occuring between Anicia Iuliana and Justinian added many architectural items to the city. Of those, the most precious one which was produced by this competitive environment was Hagia Sophia.
