The Influence of Stoic Philosophy on Thomas Hobbes’ Political Philosophy

Abstract

Thomas Hobbes is considered one of the founders of modern political thought. He claims that the most fundamental aim and endeavor of human beings is to survive and builds his political philosophy on this claim. Hobbes explains the essence of the social existence of human beings, who strive to survive with a primary instinct, with mutual distrust and fear. Hobbes’ views, which have been debated for centuries, have often been compared to the philosophers such as Rene Descartes and John Locke. However, the profound influence of Hellenistic philosophy in general and Stoic philosophy in particular on Hobbes has often been neglected. Especially in the Turkish literature, there is almost no detached work on the Stoic foundations of Hobbes’ political philosophy. This article is written to reveal the influence of Stoic philosophy on Hobbes. Throughout the article, it is attempted to show that Hobbes draws on Stoic doctrines, especially the doctrine of Oikeiosis, in many aspects while constructing his political philosophy.

Modern siyaset düşüncesinin kurucularından biri olarak kabul edilen Thomas Hobbes, insanın en temel (birincil) amaç ve çabasının hayatta kalmak olduğunu iddia eder ve siyaset felsefesini genel itibariyle bu iddia üzerine inşa eder. Bu çerçevede Hobbes, birincil bir içgüdüyle hayatta kalmaya çalışan insanın toplumsal varlığının özünü karşılıklı güvensizlik ve korku ile açıklar. Hobbes’un yüzyıllardır tartışılan, günümüz siyaset kuramları üzerinde de derin etkileri olan görüşleri pek çok kez Rene Descartes ve John Locke gibi çağdaşı filozoflar ile karşılaştırılmıştır. Buna karşın, genel olarak Helenistik felsefenin, özel olarak ise Stoa felsefesinin Hobbes üzerindeki derin etkileri çoğu zaman ihmal edilmiştir. Özellikle Türkçe literatürde Hobbes’un siyaset felsefesinin Stoacı temellerine dair müstakil olarak kaleme alınmış hemen hiçbir çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Bu makale, Stoa felsefesinin Hobbes üzerindeki doğrudan ve dolaylı etkilerini göstermek ve birçok açıdan Stoacı öğretilerden, özellikle oikeiosis öğretisinden hareket eden Hobbes’un, büyük ölçüde Hugo Grotius’un eserleri aracılığıyla haberdar olduğu ve içselleştirdiği bu öğretileri nasıl siyaset felsefesinin merkezine yerleştirdiğini göstermek amacıyla kaleme alınmıştır.
