Throughout history, knowledge and science have served as tools with significant use value across various facets of societal life. The capitalist mode of production, characterized by its system of commodity production, has commodified science, transforming it into a marketable product—a phenomenon that generally works to the detriment of societies. In the ordinary course of everyday life, this phenomenon can be manipulated in multiple ways. However, events such as natural disasters, pandemics, and wartime conditions exacerbate the inequalities engendered by commodification processes, rendering this phenomenon conspicuously apparent. The COVID-19 pandemic can be considered such an event. In contemporary society, science permeates nearly all aspects of social life, including nutrition, housing, education, health, and transportation. Consequently, the commodification of science and the social realms it encompasses has led to the loss of millions of lives during the COVID-19 pandemic, with millions more suffering numerous adverse effects. This thesis investigates the relationship between science and the capitalist mode of production from a historical perspective. The COVID-19 pandemic, which occurred during a period when health services were extensively commodified on a global scale, is examined within this context, highlighting the aspects of this process that adversely affect the public. Furthermore, the concept of social consent is scrutinized by analyzing the manipulation mechanisms that obstruct the association of the arising problems with capitalism. This study aims to explore the outcomes of the interplay between science and capitalism during the COVID-19 pandemic and to discuss a public option through the lens of social medicine experiences.
