Cicero’nun Yükümlülükler Üzerine Adlı Eserinde Gençlerin Ahlaki Eğitimi

Abstract

Cicero’nun, Atina’da felsefe eğitimi alan küçük oğlu Marcus Minor Cicero için mektup biçiminde yazdığı Yükümlülükler Üzerine (De Officiis) adlı eseri gençlerin ahlaki eğitimine dair birçok unsuru içermektedir. Bugün pek revaçta olmayan bu eser, birtakım nedenlerden ötürü göz ardı edilmektedir. Hâlbuki Cicero gençlerin ahlaki eğitimi konusunda hatırlanması gereken bir figürdür. Bu çalışma, retorik dehası ile sağlam etik ve ahlaki kurallar arasındaki bağlantı kurma konusunda başarıları nedeniyle Cicero’nun hakkını teslim etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Cicero’nun Yükümlülükler Üzerine adlı eserinin çoğunlukla genç öğrenciler için taşıdığı potansiyel nedeniyle, eğitim ortamlarında günümüz dünyasının bir parçası olması gerektiği düşünülmektedir. Bu çalışma, gençlerin ahlak eğitimi konusunda Cicero’nun ve özellikle Yükümlülükler Üzerine’sinin yeniden ele alınmasını tavsiye etmektedir. Bu amaçla, Cicero’nun adı geçen eseri başta olmak üzere ahlak felsefesine dair yazıları incelenmiş ve gençlerin ahlaki eğitimine dair tavsiyelerine yer verilmiştir. Doğası gereği çalışmanın yönteminde ciddi bir literatür taraması tercih edilmiştir. Çalışma, bir bütün olarak eserde sunulan ahlaki yükümlülükleri daha iyi değerlendirebilmek için Cicero’nun çalışmasını kaleme aldığı dönemdeki tarihsel bağlam, Cicero’nun temel siyasi kaygıları, eserinde ele aldığı ahlak felsefesi, esinlendiği kaynaklar açısından eserdeki felsefi ekoller ve gençlere yönelik öğütleri şeklinde kurgulanmıştır.

Cicero’s work On Duties (De Officiis), which is in the form of a letter written to his son Marcus Minor Cicero, who was studying philosophy in Athens, contains many elements regarding the moral education of young people, especially his younger son. This work, which is not very popular today, is ignored for some reasons. However, Cicero is a figure that should be remembered regarding the moral education of young people. This work is an attempt to do justice to Cicero regarding the connection between his rhetorical genius and strong ethical and moral rules. Our study is based on the thought that Cicero’s On Duties should become a part of the known world in educational settings, mostly because of its potential for young students. The aim of the article is to recommend a new look at Cicero and especially On Duties. For this purpose, Cicero’s writings on moral philosophy, especially the aforementioned work, were examined and his recommendations on the moral education of young people were presented. Due to its nature, a serious literature review is preferred in the method of the study. As a whole, the study is structured as the historical context of the period in which Cicero wrote his work, Cicero’s main political concerns, the moral philosophy he addressed in his work, the philosophical schools in the work in terms of the sources Cicero was inspired by, and his advice to young people, in order to better evaluate the moral obligations presented in the work.
