Books Read by Madrasa Students in the First Half of the Eighteenth Century

Abstract

This study examines the books read by Ottoman madrasa students in the first half of the eighteenth century through an analysis of probate inventories (tereke records). Primarily drawing on the records of the Kısmet-i Askeriye Court, along with other Istanbul courts, a total of 32 probate inventories belonging to madrasa students dated between 1112–1161 (1701–1748) were identified and analyzed. The study begins with a general evaluation of the students’ probate records and presents an analysis of those identified from the first half of the eighteenth century. This evaluation addresses the students’ wealth status, total estate values, and the proportion of books within their estates. Subsequently, the books owned by the students are examined based on their frequency of appearance in the records. Books that appear five times or fewer in the inventories are excluded from the main analysis and instead listed in tabular form. Finally, the study considers non-book materials presumed to be related to the students’ educational lives. Based on these records, this research contributes to the literature by offering a period-specific overview of the madrasas attended by the students who passed away in the first half of the eighteenth century, their estates, the books they left behind, and the prices of these books.XVIII. yüzyılın ilk yarısında Osmanlı medrese talebelerinin okuduğu kitapları, tereke kayıtları üzerinden değerlendiren bu çalışmada, başta Kısmet-i Askeriye Mahkemesi olmak üzere İstanbul mahkemelerine ait defterler taranarak 1112-1161 (1701-1748) tarihleri arasında tespit edilen medrese talebelerine ait 32 tereke kaydı incelenmiştir. Çalışmada öncelikle talebe terekelerine ait genel bir değerlendirme yapılmış ve XVIII. yüzyılın ilk yarısında tespit edilen terekeler analiz edilmiştir. Bu değerlendirmede talebelerin servet durumları, tereke yekunları ve kitapların servet içindeki yeri ele alınmıştır. Daha sonra talebelerin sahip oldukları kitaplar, terekelerde geçme sıklıklarına göre incelenmiştir. Terekelerde geçme sıklığı 5 adet ve altında olan kitaplar ise değerlendirmeye alınmayarak bir tablo halinde verilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda ise talebelerin eğitim-öğretim hayatları ile ilgili olduğu düşünülen kitap dışı malzemeleri değerlendirilmiştir. Bu kayıtlardan hareketle XVIII. yüzyılın ilk yarısında vefat eden medrese talebelerinin öğrenim gördüğü medreseleri, servetleri, vefat ettiklerinde geride bıraktıkları kitapları ve bu kitapların fiyatları dönemsel olarak literatüre kazandırılmıştır.
