| dc.description.abstract | This researh was written to identify Occidentalist perspectives in the poetry of the İkinci Yeni movement. Occidentalism is an academic perspective still in its formative phase and is progressing toward becoming a distinct discipline. Defined as the Eastern subject's study of the West, Occidentalism has gained prominence in recent years as a critical approach. The poets of the İkinci Yeni movement, emerging in the relatively liberal atmosphere following World War II, established a poetic language that emphasized imagery, abstraction, and form—distancing themselves as much as possible from the influences of the Garip movement and Socialist Realism. While Sezai Karakoç is notable for his multifaceted critiques of Western civilization, other İkinci Yeni poets tend to focus more heavily on critiques of the East, though traces of criticism toward the West also appear between the lines of their texts. Except for Karakoç, many of these poets approached Western civilization through the lens of a socialist worldview, offering critical perspectives on bourgeois morality and colonialist ideologies. They were particularly sensitive to events like the Spanish Civil War and broader struggles for freedom. Africa, too, appears in their work as a symbol of victimhood. Taking the side of the oppressed, these poets often embedded social issues in the background of their love-themed poems. The İkinci Yeni's approach to poetry aligns with the layered, allusion-rich, and associative style found in the works of T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. In this study, the method of close reading was employed to conduct a content analysis of both the poems and prose of these poets, leading to the identification of various Occidentalist elements within the İkinci Yeni poetry tradition. | |
