Prices and The Market in an Ottoman Chronicle During The Period of Military Campaigns: Vakı’at-ı Ruz-Merre (1688-1693)

Abstract

Official and/or inofficial chronicles offer a wide range of information on Ottoman History. This diversity shows itself in the form of contributing to military, political, social and administrative history. Although more limited, chronicles also contribute to the discipline of economic history. This contribution can be gathered under the titles of daily life and commercial relations such as tradesmen, commercial life, profession and crafts. Ottoman chronicles contain irregular or scattered and limited data, about the price history, which is one of the central issues of economic history. One of these chronicles is Vâkı‘ât-ı Rûz-merre, written by Üsküdari Abdullah Efendi. The author of this chronicle, who was a bureaucrat in the Office of Mevqufat, focused largely on military expeditions between 1688 and 1693, mentioned the prices of many products and the movements in these prices, together with their reasons. In this study the prices in the mentioned chronicle are examined and the ability of these prices to be a source in terms of economic history is discussed.

Resmi ve/veya özel kronikler Osmanlı Tarihi’ne dair geniş yelpazede bilgi sunmaktadır. Bu çeşitlilik askeri, siyasi, içtimai, idari tarihe katkıda bulunmak şeklinde tezahür eder. Ancak bu sahalara nispetle daha sınırlı olmakla birlikte kronikler iktisat tarihi disiplinine de katkı sağlar. Bu katkı esnaf, ticari hayat, meslek ve zanaatlar gibi gündelik hayat ve ticari ilişkiler başlıkları altında toplanabilir. Kronikler düzensiz veya dağınık veri içerse de iktisat tarihinin merkezinde yer alan fiyat tarihine dair de sınırlı bilgi barındırmaktadır. Bu kroniklerden biri de Üsküdari Abdullah Efendi tarafından kaleme alınan Vâkı‘ât-ı Rûz-merre’dir. 1688-1693 tarihleri arasında büyük ölçüde askeri seferlere odaklanan bu kroniğin müellifi, mevkufat kaleminde bir bürokrat olması nedeniyle birçok ürünün fiyatına ve bu fiyatlardaki hareketlere nedenleriyle birlikte değinmiştir. Bu çalışmada hem bahsedilen eserde yer alan fiyatlar incelenmiş hem de bu fiyatların iktisat tarihi açısından kaynak olabilme kabiliyeti tartışılmıştır.
