19. Yüzyılın İkinci Yarısında Moda Semti: Mekân, Levanten Sakinler, Banliyö Hayatı

Abstract

Bu tez, Kadıköy’ün Marmara Deniz’ine bakan kıyılarındaki semti Moda’nın ve Levanten sakinlerinin incelenmesi yoluyla 19. yüzyıl İstanbul’unun dönüşümüne bir bakış ve yeni bir mahallenin fiziksel ve toplumsal olarak kurulma sürecinin arkasındaki dinamikleri keşfetme girişimidir. 19. yüzyılda İstanbul’da yaşayan, şehrin olduğu gibi imparatorluğun pek çok yerindeki ticari ve endüstriyel faaliyete yön veren Levantenlerin, Moda semtindeki etkinliklerini anlamaya yöneliktir. Moda’yı bir Levanten mahallesi olarak değerlendiren bu tez, buraya yerleşen 14 aile ele alınarak, bu ailelerin içindeki bulundukları sosyal ağlar ve sosyal etkinlikler 19. yüzyıl İstanbul Levantenliğinin bir kesiti olarak, kavramın bu dönem için anlamı konusunda bir çerçeve oluşturma çabasıdır. Kentsel mekânın dönüşümünde yapılaşma, mülkiyet ve vatandaşlık konularına hukuki düzenlemeler oluşturan devlet ile kendi kentsel mekânlarını oluşturmada etkin burjuvazi/orta sınıf Levantenler, ana aktör olarak genel tabloya dahil olur. Bu sürecin aşamalarını görmek, yeni düzenlemelerin işleyişini anlamak, devlet ile seçkin gruplarının kendi aralarındaki dinamikleri ve kentsel dönüşümü toplumsal bir dönüşümün aracı olarak görmemizi sağlar. Tezin 2. bölümünde fiziksel olarak oluşan Moda kent mekânının, devlet idaresinin kanunnameler, nizamnameler ve benzer düzenlemeler çerçevesince gelişirken gayrimüslimlerin yaşadığı bir banliyöye dönüşümü anlatılır. 3. bölümde Moda’nın 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısındaki sakin profili, Moda’nın kentsel mekânını kullanma biçimleri ve burada inşa ettikleri yapıları incelerken aralarındaki ilişki ağları üzerinden, bu insanları yeni bir semtte beraber yaşamaya sevk eden gerekçeler değerlendirilir. 4. Bölümde ise Moda’nın mahalle bilinciyle oluşturulan sosyal hayatı incelenir. Bir yerleşim biçimi olarak banliyölerde inanç ve eğitimle ilgili, politik ve rekreatif etkinliklere katılım, düzenleme, dahil olmaları bağlamıyla sosyal hayata bakılır. Bunun yanında bir topluluk, bir mahalle kimliğinin oluşmasını sağlayan birliktelikler buradaki sosyal hayatı örgütleyen etkinlikler olarak konuya dahil edilir. This dissertation is a glimpse into the transformation of nineteenth-century Istanbul through the study of Moda, the district of Kadıköy on the shores of the Marmara Sea, and an attempt to explore the dynamics behind the physical and social establishment of a new neighborhood. The physical construction of Istanbul’s urban space with laws and regulations will be analyzed through the elites defined as Levantine, both foreign nationals, and foreign in the new settlement area that is in one of the peripheral areas of the city. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the determinants of the formation of the neighborhoods of Istanbul, which are outside the old centers and open to new settlements. In the transformation of urban space, the state, which creates legal regulations on the issues of construction, property and citizenship, and the elites active in creating their own urban spaces are included in the general picture as the main actors. In this new neighborhood of the city, the legal basis of construction and property relations become visible as the elites living in Istanbul as citizens of a foreign state try to shape it according to their own needs and wishes. Seeing the stages of this process and understanding the functioning of the new regulations will enable us to understand better the dynamics between the state and the elites, as well as among the elite groups that have been formed, and how to analyze urban transformation for a social transformation. The first of these is the transformation of the physically formed Moda city space in the second part from a summer resort to a suburb as the state administration develops within the framework of laws, regulations and other polities. The third part examines the profiles of the early residents, the ways in which they use Moda’s urban space, and the residential buildings they xreated here, and the reasons that led these people to live together in a new neighborhood through the networks of relationships among them. In the fourth part, the focus was on the political representation of space and the means of its reproduction through the institutions created in Moda.
