A Study on Yordan Yovkov and His Story “The White Swallow”

Abstract

Yordan Yovkov is one of the most important writers of the Bulgarian literature. He is amongst the most popular and widely read writers with his humane nature and interesting stories. He has contributed to not only Bulgarian but also world literature through the translation of his books and works into different languages. He is also known by Turkish readers for his perspective on Turkish people and humane descriptions. He is the second most translated Bulgarian writer in Turkey. Having been published in 1927, his story “The White Swallow" continues to fascinate its readers from the first day until today and is included in the curriculum of Bulgarian national education. Therefore, the story has attracted the attention of many literary scholars and critics and continues to remain popular with the public. The concept of hope and the symbol of white swallow in the story represent the hope that is sought by an unfortunate family to heal their daughter. This study aims to analyze the stylistic features of the story and to make comparison with its translations into Turkish language.

Yordan Yovkov Bulgar edebiyatının en önemli yazarları arasında yer almaktadır. İnsancıl yapısı ve ilgi uyandırıcı öyküleriyle sevilen ve çok okunan yazarlar arasındadır. Sadece Bulgaristan’da değil kitapları ve eserleri farklı dillere çevrilerek dünya edebiyatına katkı sağlamıştır. Türklere bakış açısı ve insancıl tasvirleriyle Türk okuyucusu tarafından da bilinmektedir. Türkiye’de en çok kitabı çevrilen Bulgar yazar olarak ikinci sırada yer almaktadır. 1927 yılında yayımladığı “Telgraf Telleri Boyunca” adlı öyküsü ise ilk günden günümüze kadar okuyucuları etkilemeye devam etmekte ve Bulgar milli eğitimin müfredatında yer almaktadır. Bu sebeple öykü birçok edebiyatçı ve eleştirmenin dikkatini çekmekte ve halk arasında popüler olmaya devam etmektedir. Öyküde işlenen umut kavramı ve beyaz kırlangıç sembolü talihsiz ailenin kızı için aradığı iyileştirme umudunu ifade etmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı öykünün biçemsel özelliklerini incelemek ve Türkçeye yapılan çevirileriyle karşılaştırma yapmaktır.
