Security Strategies in North Africa

Abstract

North African countries, in addition to carrying socio-cultural identity traits of both Arab and African societies, are geographically engaged with the continents of Africa, Europe, and Asia through their coastlines along the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The geopolitical features possessed by these countries necessitate the consolidation of security strategies in the face of both regional issues and geo-economic interests. Indeed, North African countries grapple with security threats arising from crises such as Libya and Western Sahara, as well as challenges in the south such as the Sahel and Tigray crises, and in the north, competition among global actors in the Eastern Mediterranean based on hydrocarbon resources. The book "Security Strategies in North Africa," edited by Enver Arpa and published by Ortadogu Yayinlari, contributes to filling the gap in this field.

Kuzey Afrika ülkeleri, sosyo kültürel açıdan Arap ve Afrika toplumlarının sahip olduğu kimlik özelliklerini taşımalarının yanı sıra coğrafi açıdan Akdeniz ve Kızıldeniz’e olan kıyılarıyla Afrika, Avrupa ve Asya kıtalarıyla etkileşim içindedir. Bu ülkelerin sahip olduğu jeopolitik özellik hem bölgesel sorunlar hem de jeoekonomik çıkarları açısından güvenlik stratejilerini konsolide etmelerini gerektirmektedir. Nitekim Kuzey Afrika ülkeleri, Libya ve Batı Sahra krizlerinin yanı sıra güneyinde Sahel ve Tigray krizleriyle ve kuzeyinde ise Doğu Akdeniz’deki hidrokarbon kaynakları temelli küresel aktörler arası rekabetin doğurduğu güvenlik tehditleriyle mücadele etmektedir. Ortadoğu yayınları tarafından Enver Arpa editörlüğünde çıkarılan Kuzey Afrika’da Güvenlik Stratejileri kitabı da bu alandaki boşluğu doldurmaya katkı sunmaktadır.
