Özet

A line of argument concerning the ontology of quiddities constituted one of the essential problematic channels of the post-Avicennan theoretical tradition. Ibn S?n?, the ultimate source of these debates, defended the metaphysical realist position, that the essences exist externally within individuals as constitutive parts of their quiddities and that the quiddities in the mind are an equal representation of these essences. However, the epistemological aspect of this realist position was criticised by Fakhr al-D?n al-R?z?, who argued that it was impossible for the representations in the mind to reflect the external essences equally. Later, a series of scholars including Na??rudd?n al-??s?, Qu?b al-D?n al-R?z?, Sayyid Shar?f al-Jurj?n?, Sa?d al-D?n al-Taft?z?n?, and ?Al? Q?shj? retained the epistemological aspect pruned by Fakhr al-D?n al-R?z? and, unlike al-R?z?, preferred to prune the ontological aspect of quiddities. Beginning with Qu?b al-D?n al-R?z?, the figures in this line argued that defending the external existence of natures means defending the existence of individual entities in the external world. Thus they developed the idea that these entities exist solely in the mind, and not in the external world. In contrast to this mentalist approach, which emphasised the mental presence of natures while weakening their external existence, the fifteenth-century thinker Jal?l al-D?n al-Daww?n? revitalized Avicenna’s realist position defending the external existence of natures. Al-Daww?n? sought ways to reconstruct this position in light of previous debates. This article provides a brief description of the mentalist tendencies that evolved between the 13th and 15th centuries, followed by a discussion of al-Daww?n?’s realist arguments. These arguments will be examined through his commentary on ?Al? Q?shj?’s analysis of Tajr?d al-?Aq?id, highlighting their connection to Avicenna’s original position.
