This article, followed by a discussion on the sound changes that the word yavuz has undergone in Turkic languages as well as throughout the historical periods of Turkish, presents in a chronological order the views on the etymology of the word in question. Consequently, it attempts to propose a new etymology for the word yavuz, drawing upon the noun stem yav (<*yab), which is still extant in the present-day Turkish language and has so far remained unnoticed.
