Utopian Socialism, Saint-Simon, and Egyptian Modernization

Abstract

The study focuses on Utopian Socialism, a doctrine that can be classified as a type of socialism. It examines the relationship between the critical thinker of this doctrine, Saint-Simon, and his followers and Egyptian modernization in the 1800s. Saint-Simonians considered Egypt under the leadership of Mehmet Ali Pasha and his successors in the 19th century as the starting point for reaching the ideal society. The importance of Saint-Simonians in terms of the modernization of Egypt, from the madrasas opened by Mehmet Ali in the context of military reform to the Suez Canal project, is remarkable in terms of both intellectual ground and concrete practices.

Çalışma sosyalizmin bir türü sınıflamasına sokulabilecek bir öğreti olan Ütopik Sosyalizmi merkeze alarak, bu öğretinin önemli düşünürü Saint-Simon’la onun takipçilerinin yani Saint- Simoncular olarak bilinen düşünürlerin 1800’lerdeki Mısır modernleşmesi ile ilişkisini mercek altına almaktadır. Saint-Simoncular, XIX. yüzyılda Mehmet Ali Paşa ve haleflerinin liderliğindeki Mısır’ı ideal topluma varmakta başlangıç noktası olarak telakki etmişlerdir. Nitekim Mehmet Ali’nin askeri reform bağlamında açtığı medreselerden Süveyş Kanalı projesine değin Saint-Simoncuların Mısır modernleşmesi açısından önemi gerek fikrî zemin gerekse somut uygulamalar açısından dikkate değerdir.
