Ali b. Ömer Kâtibî’de modal önermeler

Abstract

Bu çalışma Ali b. Ömer Kâtibî’nin modal önermelere yaklaşımını inceleme ve klasik mantık geleneği içerisindeki yerini tespit etme amacı taşımaktadır. Modalite; önermelere zorunluluk, imkân ve zaman gibi kiplerin yüklenmesiyle ortaya çıkan bir kavram olarak mantık tarihinde temel bir rol oynamıştır. İslam mantıkçıları konuyu yalnızca biçimsel boyutuyla değil, felsefi ve kelâmi yönleriyle de ele almışlardır. Klasik mantık tarihinde kayda değer dönüşümlerin yaşandığı on üçüncü yüzyıl âlimlerinden Kâtibî’nin modalite anlayışı, İslam mantık geleneğinin gelişimini ve sürekliliğini anlamak için merkezi bir konuma sahiptir. Araştırmada, Kâtibî’nin modal önermeler konusundaki fikirleri onun telif türü mantık eserlerine dayalı olarak sistematik şekilde incelenip bu hususta klasik mantık geleneğine yapmış olduğu katkılar ortaya konulmuştur. Birinci bölümde öncelikle modalite konusu açıklanmış ve konunun Kâtibî öncesi arka planı ele alınmıştır. Devamında eserler kronolojik sırayla ve modal önermeler özelinde karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiştir. İkinci ve son bölümde ise eserler arası farklılıklar analiz edilerek Kâtibî’nin modal önermelere, önermeler arası ilişkilere ve hükümlerine dair genel görüşü tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Tezde karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenen dört eserde de Kâtibî aynı on üç modal önermeyi ele almış ve açıklamıştır. Eserler arasında modal önermeler kısmında sıralama, açıklama ve örnekler dışında belirgin bir fark bulunmazken, modal önermelerin düz döndürme ve ters döndürme hükümlerinde görüş farklılıkları bulunduğu görülmüştür. Ancak bu farklılıklar hükümlerin tanımına yönelik değildir. Farklılık, modal önermelerden altı tanesinin düz ve ters döndürmelerinin nasıl olacağına yöneliktir. Bu durum, onun mantık anlayışının durağan değil, canlı ve tartışmaya açık bir yapıda bulunduğunu ortaya çıkarmaktadır.

This study aims to discuss Ali b. Umar al-Kātibī’s approach to modal propositions and determine its place within the classical logic tradition. Modality, as a concept that emerged with the predication of modes (moods) such as necessity, possibility, and time to propositions, has played an important role in the history of logic, and Islamic logicians have treated the subject not only in its formal aspects but also in its philosophical and theological ones. Kātibī’s understanding of modality, who is at an important turning point in the classical logic tradition, is of key importance in understanding the development and continuity of the Islamic logic tradition. In this study, Kātibī’s ideas on modal propositions are systematically examined based on his original works on logic, and his contributions to the classical logic tradition in this regard are revealed. The first chapter opens with a discussion of modality, proceeds with an exploration of the background of the subject prior to Kātibī, and subsequently analyzes his works chronologically and comparatively, with particular emphasis on modal propositions. In the second and final chapter, differences between his works are analyzed in an attempt to determine Kātibī’s general views on modal propositions, the relationships between propositions, and their rules. In the four works examined comparatively in the thesis, Kātibī handled and explained the same thirteen modal propositions. While there are no significant differences between his works except in terms of the order, explanation, and examples of modal propositions, there are differences in his views on the rules of conversion and obversion of modal propositions. However, these differences do not concern the definition of the rules. The difference concerns how the conversion and obversion of six of the modal propositions should be. These differences reveal that his understanding of logic is not a static one, but rather a dynamic and open to debate structure.
