The Llibre dels Fets, dictated by King James I of Aragon (Jaume el Conqueridor), who reigned between 1213 and 1276, holds a significant place within the autobiographical historiographical tradition of medieval Europe. The Llibre does not merely record the life story of a king; it also reflects his public, dynastic, and personal identity through his own voice as a primary source, thereby attaining the rare quality of an ego-document within medieval historiography. In this respect, the Llibre dels Fets is not only one of the earliest autobiographical texts to carry the personal narrative of a medieval monarch, but also a work that deserves scrutiny for the dynamic interplay it presents between the idealized royal persona and the human dimension of kingship. This thesis analyzes how King James constructs the figure of the "ideal king" throughout the Llibre dels Fets, while simultaneously revealing his own inner, emotional self. The portrait James draws of himself—both as an ideal, powerful sovereign and as an individual who expresses personal emotions—surpasses the conventional representational patterns of medieval monarchy. Far from being limited to conquest narratives or dynastic chronicle, the Llibre emerges as a self-narrative interwoven with the king's subjective experiences, fears, joys, disappointments, and even moments of weeping. The first chapter of the thesis explores King James's relationships with his wives and children in his role as the head of a dynasty. While royal consorts and offspring are typically treated as secondary figures in medieval courtly literature, the Llibre dels Fets grants them notable visibility. James's open praise or criticism of specific children provides rare insight into the emotional dimensions of royal fatherhood. Similarly, his favorable or unfavorable comments about his wives shed light on both his political and personal perspectives, while also offering valuable clues as to what constituted an "ideal queen" in the eyes of a medieval king. The second chapter focuses on King James's public image as an ideal ruler. This section discusses how James constructs the paradigm of ideal kingship, especially through the lens of justice and his relations with nobles and subjects. His balance between punishment and mercy can be observed in his interactions with both the aristocracy and the general populace. Moreover, the authority he exhibits in public life aligns with his claim to a divinely sanctioned kingship. The third chapter evaluates the emotional expressions displayed by King James throughout the text. Although the dominant expectation in the medieval period was for rulers to suppress their emotions, James frequently conveys his anger, grief, and joy with striking openness. While such emotions are inherently human, the thesis also investigates how these emotional expressions align or conflict with the portrait of an ideal king as constructed in the Llibre.
dc.description.abstract1213-1276 yılları arasında Aragon Krallığında hüküm süren Kral I. James'in (Jaume el Conqueridor) dikte ettirerek kaleme aldırdığı Llibre dels Fets, Orta Çağ Avrupası otobiyografik tarih geleneği içinde önemli bir yere sahiptir. İkinci bölümde ise Kral James'in kamusal alandaki ideal kral imajı ortaya konmuştur. Üçüncü bölümde ise, Kral James'in metin boyunca sergilediği duygular değerlendirilmiştir.
