This research is a cross-sectional, descriptive and relationship-determining study conducted to examine the relationship between premenstrual syndrome (PMS) status and emotional eating (EE) behaviors of university students. The sample of the study consisted of 554 female students studying at Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Health Sciences and agreeing to participate in the study. The data were collected using the ''Descriptive Information Form'', ''Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS)'', ''Emotional Eating Scale (EES)''. One-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis and regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. According to the findings; It was determined that the average age of the students was 20,690±1,813 years, 73.5% (n=407) of them were of normal weight, 44.0% (n=244) of them skipped meals, 72% (n=399) of them had regular menstruation, and 75.5% (n=418) of them had menstrual pain. It was determined that 28.5% (n=158) of the students experienced PMS and 48.4% (n=268) showed EE behavior. Total mean of PMSS was 127.050±36.008; the total mean of EES was found to be 36.090±14.533. The correlation analysis performed to determine the relationship between the PMSS total score and the EES total score was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). A weak positive correlation was found between the students' PMSS total score and EES total score. It has been observed that students' PMS states affect their EE state by 11%. Anxiety, pain, bloating and sleeping sub-dimensions were found to affect EE score by 21.5%. High anxiety, sleep and bloating increased the total level of EES score; pain was found to decrease the total level of EES score. No statistically significant correlation was found between depressive affect, fatigue, irritability, depressive thoughts and changes in appetite and the total level of EES (p>0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between body mass index (BMI) value and EES in the study (p<0.05). As a result, PMS affects students' EE behaviors. For this reason, it is thought that the psychiatric nurse has an important role in reducing emotional eating behavior by recognizing PMS complaints and taking preventive measures. It is important for nurses to know PMS complaints, EE behavior symptoms and causes. Appropriate nursing care should be given to individuals who experience PMS and EE behavior.
