Instructors' perceptions of the use of computers in English language teaching at higher education

Abstract

Öğretim görevlilerinin bilgisayar entegrasyonundaki sorumlulukları nispeten fazladır ancak literatürde bulunan kısıtlı çalışmalar daha kapsamlı çalışmaların gerekliliğini göstermektedir. Bu nedenle, bu araştırma, Türkiye'deki yüksek öğretim kurumlarında, İngilizce öğretim ve öğreniminde, öğretim görevlilerinin bilgisayar kullanımına ilişkin bilgisi, tutumu, kendine olan güveni, günlük kullanım alışkanlıkları ve çalıştığı kurumun iklimi ve desteği gibi etkileyen faktörleri de içeren bilgisayar kullanımına ilişkin algılarını incelemektedir. Bu tanımlayıcı çalışmada, nicel veriler, bir arka plan kısmı ve 5 bölüm, 64 maddeden oluşan bir ölçek ile 210 öğretim görevlisinden toplanmıştır. İstatistiksel analiz sonrasında, sonuçlara ulaşılmıştır. Öğretim görevlerinin bilgisi belirli yazılımlarla sınırlıyken, kişisel ilgileri de iletişim ve işle alakalı araçlarla sınırlıdır. Çoğunlukla bilgisayarlara karşı olumlu tutum takınırlar ve öğretim sürecinde bilgisayar entegrasyonu konusunda özgüvene sahiptirler. Son olarak, kurumlarının gerekli eğitici ve teknik desteğe ve teknik altyapıya sahip olduğuna inanırlar. Faktörler arasındaki korelasyonlar, öğretmenlerin bilgisayar bilgisi ile hem bilgisayar alışkanlıklarının hem de özgüvenlerinin pozitif, bilgisayar tutumlarının negatif ilişkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca, öğretmenlerin özgüvenleri ile hem kişisel bilgisayar alışkanlıklarının hem de okul çevrelerinin pozitif bağları vardır.

It is clear that teachers' responsibility for the integration of computers is relatively high; however, limited research found in the literature proves the need for more comprehensive studies. Therefore, this study investigates the instructors' perceptions of using computers, affecting factors such as teachers' computer knowledge, computer habits, computer attitudes, perceived self-confidence, and school climate, and support in English teaching and learning at higher education institutions in Turkey. In this descriptive research, the quantitative data were collected from 210 instructors with a questionnaire consisting of a background part and a scale which has five sections with 64 items. After the statistical analysis, several results were reached. While instructors had limited knowledge of specific software, their personal interests were also limited to communication and work-related tools. They mostly held positive attitudes towards computers and have self-confidence in integrating computers into the teaching process. Last, they believed their institutions had the necessary instructional and technical support and infrastructure. The correlations among factors presented positive relations between teachers' knowledge and both their computer habits and self-confidence while a negative relationship with their attitudes. Besides, there are also positive links between their self-confidence and both their personal computer habits and their school environment.
