A Study on the Reasons for Repair and Binding Renewal of Modern Books

Abstract

The materials in the libraries are destroyed over time by various factors and become unusable. Books whose text-volume integrity is broken and whose leaves are scattered are sent to be bound or dropped from the register. It is important to determine the factors that cause structural deformation in books and to take the necessary precautions, especially in order to prevent the destruction of the works in archive libraries and to preserve the original structures of the works for many years. With this study, which was carried out to determine the structural features of destroyed books, to analyse the damage situation and to reveal the causes of destruction, it is aimed to prevent and reduce the damage seen in modern books and to increase the effectiveness of preventive conservation studies. In this study, the structural features and damage status of 856 books were evaluated while sending them for repair from collection of the National Library of Turkey, and the factors of destruction in the books were examined. It has been determined that the main factors causing the destruction of the books examined within the scope of the research are misusage, poor material quality and incorrect storage. While the most damaging factor in hard cover books is the absence of backing cloth or the use of paper instead of backing cloth, the main reason for sending paperback books to binding is that the glue used in these books becomes ineffective over time.

Kütüphanelerdeki materyaller çeşitli etkenlerce zamanla tahribata uğrayarak kullanılamaz hale gelmektedir. Metin-cilt bütünlüğü bozulup yaprakları dağılan kitaplar ciltlenmeye gönderilmekte veya kayıttan düşülmektedir. Kitaplarda yapısal deformasyona sebep olan etkenlerin belirlenerek gerekli tedbirlerin alınması, özellikle arşiv kütüphanelerindeki eserlerin tahribata uğramalarının engellenmesi ve eserlerin özgün yapılarının korunarak uzun yıllar saklanması açısından önemlidir. Tahrip olmuş kitapların yapısal özelliklerinin belirlenmesi, tahribat durumunun analizi ve tahribat sebeplerinin ortaya çıkarılması amacıyla yapılan bu çalışma ile modern kitaplarda görülen tahribatların engellenmesi, azaltılması ve önleyici koruma çalışmalarının etkinliğinin artırılması hedeflenmektedir. Bu çalışmada Ankara Milli Kütüphane koleksiyonundan onarıma gönderilen 856 kitabın yapısal özellikleri ve tahribat durumu değerlendirilerek kitaplardaki tahribatın oluşma etkenleri irdelenmiştir. Araştırma kapsamında incelenen kitapların tahribata uğramalarına neden olan ana etkenlerin kullanım hatası, malzeme kalitesizliği ve depolama hatası olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sert kapak kitaplarda tahribata en fazla neden olan etmen, sırt bezi yokluğu veya sırt bezi yerine kâğıt kullanılması iken karton kapak kitapların ciltlemeye gönderilmesinin ana nedeni bu kitaplarda kullanılan yapıştırıcının zamanla işlevini yürütemez hale gelmesidir.
