The Structure and Characteristics of the Legends Told Among Turkish Cypriots

Abstract

Cyprus is an island that has maintained its importance throughout history in the east of the Mediterranean Sea, in a region at the center of world history. This island, which the great empires of world history wanted to own, has been an area of struggle throughout history, and people from many nations have come and settled. It has created a unique culture with the interaction between religion, language and culture. Turks, who constitute the second largest population on the island, carried the cultural heritage they received from their ancestors to the island and enriched it with the cultures they encountered on the island.In this article, legends, which are a part of the Turkish Cypriot culture, are being analyzed. The legends compiled by various researchers were evaluated in terms of content and style, and the characteristics of the legends identified by combining similar variants were tried to be determined. Legends were analyzed according to their subjects, the region where they were told, their sources, the messages given, and evaluated according to their structures. Based on the fact that legends are narratives showing the character of the society, some evaluations were made about the character of the Turkish Cypriots based on the legends compiled. Legends with religious content were evaluated as myths and excluded from the study.

Kıbrıs Akdeniz’in doğusunda, Dünya tarihinin merkezinde bir bölgede tarih boyunca önemini korumuş bir adadır. Dünya tarihinin büyük imparatorluklarının sahip olmak istedikleri bu ada tarih boyunca bir mücadele alanı olmuş, birçok milletten insanlar gelip yerleşmiştir. Din, dil ve kültür arasında etkileşim ile kendine has bir kültür yaratmıştır. Adada ikinci büyük nüfusu oluşturan Türkler atalarından aldıkları kültürel mirası adaya taşımışlar, adada karşılaştıkları kültürlerle de zenginleştirmişlerdir. Bu çalışmada Kıbrıs Türkünün kültürünün bir parçası olan efsaneler incelenmektedir. Muhtelif araştırmacılar tarafından derlenen efsaneler içerik ve üslup açısından değerlendirilmiş, benzer varyantlar birleştirilerek tespit edilen efsanelerin özellikleri belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Efsaneler, konularına, söylendikleri bölgeye, kaynaklarına, verilen iletilere göre incelenmiş, yapılarına göre değerlendirilmiştir. Efsanelerin toplumun karakterini gösteren anlatılar olmasından hareketle derlenen efsanelerden yola çıkarak Kıbrıs Türkünün karakteri hakkında birtakım değerlendirilmede bulunulmuştur. Dini muhtevalı efsaneler menkıbe olarak değerlendirilmiş ve çalışma dışında tutulmuştur..
