Book Review: Money and Government

Abstract

Robert Skidelsky, widely recognized in Türkiye for his works on John M. Keynes, offers readers a fresh perspective with his book Money and Government, which was translated into Turkish in 2021. In this work, Robert Skidelsky develops a critique of the mainstream economic paradigm, which has prevailed throughout history and dominated the field of economics, from the political economy perspective. Skidelsky examines technical issues in political economy within the framework of prevailing economic doctrines' past, present, and future, drawing on insights from historical debates. Skidelsky approaches his main arguments with a historical perspective, leveraging his identity as an economic historian. Despite its criticisms, Money and Government is a striking book. On one hand, the book provides glimpses into the history of macroeconomics; on the other, it serves as a thought-provoking resource for readers interested in broadening their perspectives, exploring beyond conventional economics, and questioning the fundamental assumptions of the mainstream school of thought.

Türkiye’de daha çok John M. Keynes hakkında yazdığı çalışmalarla tanınan Robert Skidelsky, 2021 yılında dilimize çevrilen, Para ve Devlet (“Money and Government”) başlıklı çalışması ile okuyucuya yeni bir perspektif sunmaktadır. Robert Skidelsky bu çalışmasında, tarih boyunca süregelen ve iktisat biliminde hakim olan ana akım (“main-stream”) iktisat paradigmasına karşı, siyasal iktisat perspektifinden bir eleştiri geliştirir. Skidelsky, hakim iktisadi doktrinlerin dünü, bugünü ve yarını çerçevesinde teknik siyasal iktisat meselelerine, tarihsel tartışmalardan da sonuçlar çıkararak açıklama getirmeye çalışır. İktisat tarihçiliği kimliğinden yararlanan Skidelsky, ana argümanlarına tarihi bir bakış açısıyla yaklaşmaktadır. Skidelsky’ın “Para ve Devlet” kitabı, tüm eleştirilere rağmen çarpıcı bir kitap.
